Advocacy in Canada

Abstract Summary

Canada has been a hotbed of advocacy momentum over the past few years as more and more provinces are enacting Universal CMV Screening initiatives or considering doing so. This abstract will focus on the role of advocacy in Canada and how parents are partnering with healthcare practitioners to enact change. We will begin by summarizing the key takeaways from the Take Action for cCMV Workshop Agenda which took place in Ottawa in 2022. This workshop provided an opportunity for parents, healthcare practitioners, and policymakers to discuss the challenges associated with cCMV and to develop strategies for improving outcomes for affected children. One of the key strategies identified during the workshop was the importance of bringing together different people with similar stories. CMV Canada is playing a critical role in this regard by providing a platform for parents to connect, share their experiences, and support each other. Another important strategy identified during the workshop was the need for provincial governments to implement screening programs for cCMV. CMV Canada has been advocating for this change by working with policymakers and healthcare practitioners to raise awareness about the importance of screening. Finally, we will discuss the importance of supporting relevant research in Canada. By funding research studies focused on cCMV, we can increase our understanding of this virus and develop new treatments and therapies for affected children. In conclusion, this abstract will provide insights into the role of advocacy in Canada and how parents are partnering with healthcare practitioners to enact change. By summarizing the key takeaways from the Take Action for cCMV Workshop Agenda, highlighting the importance of CMV Canada, advocating for provincial screening programs, and supporting relevant research, we hope to raise awareness about cCMV and improve outcomes for affected children.
