Florida's Early Experience Implementing Targeted cCMV Screening
Abstract Summary
In April 2022, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law Senate Bill 292 requiring hospitals to do point-of-care congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV) screening for babies who do not pass the inpatient newborn hearing screen. The cCMV legislation amended section 383.145, Florida Statutes governing newborn and infant hearing screening. The cCMV screening requirements were implemented on January 1, 2023. This workshop will highlight Florida’s implementation approach, planning activities, early experience, lessons learned, and continuous quality improvement strategies.

Kimberly Porter is Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Coordinator at the Florida Department of Health. Ms. Porter has worked extensively with stakeholders at local, state, and national to plan, implement, and evaluate programs. Notable projects Mrs. Porter has coordinated include the Health Families Florida, Building Strong Families Pilot and the Florida Early Steps Professional Development Project led by the University of Florida, Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies. Mrs. Porter also provided technical assistance and training to local municipalities on implementation of the Gang Reduction Model through the National Gang Center.

Miranda Nerland is one of two CMV and Hearing Loss Follow Up Specialists working with the FL EHDI program. As the parent of a child with both deafness and other disabilities, she is passionate about personally connecting with families of children newly identified as deaf or hard-of-hearing, providing the emotional support and resources they need to succeed. Her goal is to support D/HH children in FL through personal outreach and positive policy change.

Natasha Rich is a dedicated professional with almost 20 years of experience in early intervention. As one of two CMV and Hearing Loss Follow-up Specialists working with the FL EHDI program, she plays a crucial role in supporting families and children with hearing differences. Natasha's personal journey as a mother to a son with Microtia Atresia has fueled her passion for connecting with parents and raising awareness about the significance of early intervention. Her expertise extends from her work with the Florida Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part C Program, Early Steps, to the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind Parent Infant Program.
