Spreading CMV Awareness: How You Can Get Involved in Your Community

Abstract Summary

Congenital CMV (cCMV) continues to be an important and often overlooked cause of birth defects and childhood disabilities in the US, causing at least 4,000 children to be disabled each year. Awareness of cCMV remains low, with less than 9% of pregnant women having heard of cCMV. This presentation will focus on how parents and cCMV advocates can get involved through fundraising and awareness activities with the ultimate intent of eliminating cCMV. Grassroots efforts are an important way that advocates can spread cCMV awareness, and this presentation will give participants concrete ideas for starting CMV awareness activities in their own communities. This presentation will include a panel discussion focused on ways parents and advocates can get involved, and will be led by volunteers with the National CMV Foundation’s Community Alliance Program.
