Raising Awareness of cCMV in Arizona: Stop CMV AZ / Alto CMV AZ

Abstract Summary

Missed diagnoses of congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) impede early intervention and have negative effects on children who are deaf and hard of hearing. cCMV infection is preventable if women are educated about contracting it while pregnant, but cCMV awareness is very low. The absence of state standardized newborn cCMV screening, and a lack of cCMV awareness is the root cause of its continued impact on Arizonan communities. We discuss our partnership Stop CMV AZ/Alto CMV AZ, which includes key public health, parent and provider collaborators associated through AzEHDI. The goals of this ongoing multi-year research are to 1) measure and 2) improve the effectiveness of educational materials about congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) prevention, developed specifically for Arizona’s unique maternal population comprised of a relatively high proportion of young mothers who identify as Spanish-speaking/Latinx. We present Phase III of this project, with the objective of developing and analyzing our website to optimize the effectiveness and distribution of the public health materials developed in Phase I and Phase II. By using the lens of cultural humility and partnerships in our community, we aimed to evaluate whether Spanish-speakers more likely to engage in health education materials when presented in Spanish. Although this hypothesis seems simple, there is a lack of educational materials both presented in Spanish, but also developed specifically for this population. It is important to measure the effectiveness of materials developed specifically to address the concerns of Spanish-speaking populations to increase health equity around prenatal CMV education. This study was approved by the Midwestern University IRB (AZ #1277, IRB approval 7/10/2019), and funded by Midwestern University (to KMM), the National CMV Foundation (to MS and KMM), HRSA EHDI (to LO), The Arizona Community Foundation and The EAR Foundation of Arizona (to MS).

Learning Objectives

  • Define cultural humility in relation to health education.
  • Discuss evidence for engagement with educational materials
  • Explain the use of web analytics to evaluate effectiveness of websites.
