Global Vaccines and Immunizations: The Science vs The antiscience

Abstract Summary

Global immunizations have produced extraordinary public health gains. Since the formation of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in 2000, we have seen 70-90% reductions in under 5 deaths from vaccine preventable illnesses such as measles and pertussis. But there is more to be done. At our Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (TCH-CVD) we are developing low cost vaccines for parasitic infections, but also a low-cost COVID vaccine reaching 100 million people in India and Indonesia. Now as we gradually get on the other side of COVID we are seeing unprecedented declines in global immunizations leading to a resurgence of vaccine-preventable illnesses. A significant component is the result of a globalizing antivaccine movement that first accelerated in the U.S. first because of parental concerns around autism and later health freedom politics. During the pandemic an estimated 200,000 Americans perished because they refused COVID vaccinations and now this antivaccine activism is spilling over to childhood immunizations. Ways to counteract a potential unraveling of our precious antivaccine ecosystem will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • understand the vaccine preventable diseases
  • appreciate the impact vaccines have on global and public health
  • realize antivaccine movements may counteract the benefits of vaccines
