Partnering for a Purpose: Collaborations to Eliminate CMV

Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV), is the most common viral infection and the leading non-genetic cause of infant hearing loss in the United States. Aside from hearing loss, CMV contributes to 1 child being permanently disabled every hour. CMV occurs in about 1 in 200 births (30,000+ per year), yet 91% of women do not know about it. Furthermore, there is no CMV vaccine available, and screening protocols and modalities vary by site. To address these gaps in awareness, screening, and research, the National CMV Foundation (NCMVF) has established and leveraged partnerships with clinicians, pharmaceutical companies, and non-profit organizations to collaborate on education and outreach activities, research efforts, and relevant, accurate and timely information dissemination. This presentation will highlight the significance of effective collaboration and partnerships to fight CMV, through increasing awareness of cCMV and establishing the NCMVF as a respected leader in furthering congenital CMV research.

  • Describe best practices for identifyig partners to address CMV screening, awareness and research gaps
  • Describe best practices and lessons learned for sustaining partnerships
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of NCMVF partnerships
