Strategies for Early Congenital Cytomegalovirus Detection: Before and After the Utah HB81 Law

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a member of the ?-herpesvirus family, is the most common infectious cause of congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in the United States, accounting for 20% or more of SNHL in childhood. The recognition that CMV is a major public health problem was a major factor in the successful enactment of the State of Utah’s CMV Public Health Initiative. This presentation will discuss the medical rationale for this initiative and the medical knowledge obtained since implementation. We will describe background data from a pilot study of CMV screening, present initial medical and hearing data from the Utah CMV Public Health Initiative and summarize our current approach to evaluating children with CMV-induced SNHL.
