Development of Vaccines Against CMV

Vaccines against CMV are needed to prevent congenital infection as well as disease in transplant recipients. Many approaches are being taken by vaccine manufacturers, biotechnology companies and academics to develop such vaccines, including both live and killed candidates. Importantly, partial success has already been achieved to prevent acquisition of the virus in susceptible women and reduction of disease in transplant patients. However, although the path forward is clear there is much ground to be traversed before licensure of a vaccine.
